Welcome to the fascinating world of fermenting. This ancient practice, rooted in cultures across the globe, transforming simple ingredients into nutrient-dense powerhouses, and it's far more important than many realise, not just for our physical well-being but for our mental health too. When we ferment foods like vegetables, grains, or dairy, we're essentially inviting beneficial microorganisms to do their magic, breaking down complex compounds and creating an abundance of probiotics – the "good" bacteria that form the cornerstone of a healthy gut microbiome. A thriving gut is entirely linked to a healthy mind, influencing everything from mood regulation and stress response to cognitive function. Teaching wildlings about fermenting foods isn't just about food preparation; it's about giving them with essential knowledge for a healthier future, connecting them to traditional food ways, encouraging an understanding of microbial life, and instilling a lifelong appreciation for foods that truly nourish their bodies and minds.

I recently embarked on a wonderfully insightful fermenting course with Hannah from Purely Nourishing, nestled right here in beautiful South Devon. It was an absolute delight, and incredibly empowering, as we delved into the art of making delicious sauerkraut and kombucha. What truly struck me was the sheer simplicity of it all – Hannah demystified the process, showing us just how easy it is to ferment your own food at home with minimal fuss and readily available ingredients. She is a truly natural teacher, imparting so much valuable information without ever making us feel overwhelmed; her calm, knowledgeable approach made learning a joy. I feel truly honoured to now be able to take this essential, ancient wisdom and pass it onto the wildlings in the woods, equipping them with the skills to nourish themselves and understand the living nature of food.
